MINATARE – EJ Garza, a senior at Minatare High School, has been named Nspire Today!’s Male Student of the Month for April, sponsored by 16th Empire Restaurant in Scottsbluff. At school, Garza is involved in FFA, band (trumpet), One Act, Quiz Bowl, basketball, and track and field. Outside of school, he helps with the children’s ministry at Northfield Church in Gering. After he graduates from high school, he plans to utilize the full tuition scholarship he received to study pre-veterinary medicine at WNCC. He then wants to continue his education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. His parents are J.R. and Veronica Garza. For being named a student of the month, EJ will receive a gift certificate for a free meal at 16th Empire Restaurant.
Q: How has your senior year of school been going?
GARZA: “I feel like my senior year has been pretty relaxing, mainly because of the hybrid schedule we’ve had this school year. For most of this school year, I learned using Zoom on Mondays and Wednesdays, and then I had class in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I then used Fridays to catch up on things, if needed. It’s changed this fourth quarter because we’ve had class in-school four days a week. I’ve enjoyed the schedule this year.”
Q: Is it hard for you to believe you’re a senior?
GARZA: “Yes, it is. It’s really starting to hit me now that we’re nearing the end of the school year.”
Q: What is your favorite activity at school?
GARZA: “I would say FFA because I’ve gone to state in it all four years of high school. I’ve gone in vet sciences, meats and evaluations, welding, and floral culture. My sophomore year I placed 19th out of 424 kids, and my junior year I placed 30th out of about 200 kids. We’re waiting to get the results of this year’s state competition.”
