MINATARE – Haydon Olds, a senior at Minatare High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for January, sponsored by Kristy Culek Agency, LLC-American Family Insurance. Haydon is in his fourth year as a starter on Minatare’s varsity wrestling team. He came into the month of January with a 15-3 record at 182 pounds. He’s looking to qualify for the Nebraska state tournament for the second straight season. Last year he posted a 32-7 record. Olds was also a standout football player for the Indians, rushing for 1,239 yards on 148 carries and scoring 21 touchdowns this past fall. He also made 83 tackles. He earned all-conference and honorable mention all-state honors. After graduating from high school, Olds plans to attend WNCC, where he’ll start pursuing a degree in criminal justice. His parents are Tiffany Olds and Anthony Benavides. For being named an athlete of the month, Haydon will receive a gift card for a free drink at Scooter’s Coffee.
Q: How has your wrestling season been going?
OLDS: “I’m in a higher weight class this year with a lot of guys who are taller and bigger than me, but I’m really pleased with how I’ve been doing.”
Q: What are your goals for this wrestling season?
OLDS: “My main goal is to place at state.”
Q: How do you feel you’re wrestling this season compared to last season?
OLDS: “I feel like things are going even smoother for me this season. I have more confidence this year because I’ve been to state, so I know what I need to do to compete well at a high level.”
