MORRILL – Isaiah Guerue, a senior at Morrill High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for April, sponsored by Kristy Culek Agency, LLC-American Family Insurance. Guerue is one of the region’s top football players. He was a two-way starter at defensive end and offensive left guard all four years of high school. He earned all-conference, all-district and all-state honors. He was selected to play in three all-star football games this June: the Shrine Bowl in Kearney, the 8-Man All-Star Game in Hastings; and the West Nebraska All-Star Game in Scottsbluff. Guerue also excelled in basketball, starting on varsity two years at post and earning multiple all-conference honors. Guerue, who played golf his first three years of high school in the spring, is competing in track and field this spring, and he’s off to a solid start, earning high placings in both the shot put and the discus. Also at school, Guerue was involved in FCA, and he has a 3.45 GPA. After he graduates from high school, he plans to play football and study wildlife management at Chadron State College. His parents are Josh and Cynthia Guerue. For being named an athlete of the month, Isaiah will receive a gift card for a free drink at Scooter’s Coffee.
Q: What are your goals for this track and field season?
GUERUE: “My goal is just to do the best I can since this is my first year in track and field. I’m hoping to place in every meet in either the shot put or the discus.”
Q: Why did you decide to participate in track and field your senior year?
GUERUE: “I had been doing golf – I was the PAC champion my sophomore year – but I kind of wanted to try something new this year. The last time I threw was in junior high, but I’ve gotten a lot stronger since then, so I wanted to see how I could do this year in the shot put and discus.”
Q: Out of all the sports you compete in, which one do you enjoy the most?
GUERUE: “Definitely football. I love the contact and aggressiveness of the sport.”
