GERING – Cami Newman, a senior at Gering High School, is Nspire Today!’s Female Athlete of the Month for February. Newman is one of the top volleyball players in the region, and she recently signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Doane University in Crete. A four-year letter winner in volleyball, Newman started three years as a middle blocker. She earned a number of all-conference, all-region, and honorable mention all-state honors during that span. Newman also has been participating in tennis since her freshman year, and she’s competed at state each of the last three years. Newman is also a standout in the classroom, holding a 3.8 GPA. She was inducted into National Honor Society last year. She’s also involved in the Gering Girls Athletic Association. At Doane, she plans to major in either biology or biochemistry, and her career goal is to be a pediatric dentist. Her parents are Amy and Tom Newman.
Q: How excited are you for the opportunity to keep playing volleyball at Doane University?
NEWMAN: “I’m really excited about it. I love volleyball, so I’m glad I’ll get to keep playing. I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates.”
Q: Were there other colleges you were considering? Also, why did you pick Doane?
NEWMAN: “There were a few schools looking at me. I also looked at Hastings College, Peru State College, and Williston State College in North Dakota. The main reason I chose Doane is because I really like the coaches there, and I love the campus. That was big in my decision. Hastings also has a really good volleyball program, but I didn’t like the campus there as much.”
Q: How do you feel like your high school senior volleyball season went overall?
NEWMAN: “It went really well. I felt like I connected more with my teammates this year. We had a lot of fun.”
