HAY SPRINGS – Gabe Varvel, a senior at Hay Springs High School, has been named Nspire Today!’s Male Student of the Month for February. He’s a three-sport standout, competing in football, basketball and golf. In football, Varvel started three years at tight end and defensive end. He earned all-conference and all-district honors his junior and senior years. In basketball, he’s in his third season as a starting guard. He was named to the all-conference basketball team both his sophomore and junior years. In golf, he’s been on the varsity team each of the last three years, and he was the Panhandle Conference Golf Tournament champion last year. He also nearly made it to state last year, finishing just one stroke shy of qualifying. Varvel has also excelled in band as a tuba player. He was named to the Class D all-state band and was selected to the Oregon Trail Honor Band each of the last three years. He also participated in the Fall Band Festival at Doane University earlier this school year. He has a 3.8 GPA. At school, he’s also involved in speech. After graduating from high school, Varvel plans to attend either Chadron State, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, or Doane. His parents are Raime and Jim Varvel.
