Cambree Schmaltz, a junior at Bayard High School, has been lifting weights the last four years, mostly because she enjoys staying in shape and also because she knows it helps her while competing in sports and performing physical tasks on her family’s ranch/feedlot. She never intended to break any weight lifting records, but that’s what happened just before Christmas break, when she set a school record in the squat. She’s also on the school’s Wall of Honor for her power clean max, and she’s only 5 pounds away from getting on the Wall of Honor for her bench press, too.

BAYARD – When Cambree Schmaltz isn’t busy doing schoolwork, playing sports, or participating in one of her other school activities at Bayard High School, chances are you’ll be able to find her at her family’s feedlot, sorting cows, pounding in fence posts, or doing any number of other tasks.
It’s strenuous at times, she said, but she enjoys it.
“Every day of work is a little bit different, which I like,” said Schmaltz, who’s a junior at BHS. “You never know what you’re going to be doing until that day. I like the variety, and I like helping out as much as I can. It’s rewarding contributing to what my parents [Britni and Eric Schmaltz] have built.”
