SCOTTSBLUFF – Austin Thyne, a senior at Scottsbluff High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for April. He’s a two-sport athlete, excelling in both basketball and golf. In basketball, he started at point guard every year of high school. This season he averaged 15.7 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game for the Bearcats, who reached the first round of the Nebraska state tournament and finished with a 21-6 record. Among his postseason honors was earning a spot on Huskerland’s Class B All-State First Team. Thyne, who attended Mitchell High School his first three years of high school, earned Class C-1 all-state second-team honors last season. He’s also been highly successful in golf, including winning a district title and placing 11th at last year’s Class C state tournament. In addition to achieving lots of success in sports, Thyne is a standout in the classroom. He has a 4.0 GPA and is in National Honor Society. After graduating from high school, he plans to pursue an education degree and possibly play basketball at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado. His parents are Holly and Jason Thyne.
Q: What are your goals in your final high school golf season?
THYNE: “As a team, we’re pretty young this year, but there’s a lot of talent on the team. Winning the first tournament of the season was a big deal. If we keep working hard and improving as a team, I think we’ll have a chance to qualify for state and maybe place high at state, especially since the state tournament is here in Scottsbluff this year. Individually, I’m hoping to place in the top 10 at state or maybe even the top five.”
