‘Oaks captured our hearts and all the other hearts around him’

Krista and John Wiedeman of Gering were devastated in September when their baby boy passed away after battling a number of birth defects. However, the Wiedemans are grateful for the time they got to spend with Oaks, and they also feel blessed because of the big impact that Oaks made on their family and all the other people who knew him.

GERING – After having three boys, John and Krista Wiedeman of Gering thought for sure they were finally going to have a girl.

They even picked out a name – a unique, special name – for their fourth child: Oaklynn.

“We loved that name,” Krista said. “We thought it was beautiful.”

The first 20 weeks of Krista’s pregnancy this year only strengthened the Wiedeman’s belief that they would soon be adding a daughter to their family.

“I was really sick through most of the pregnancy, and I was never sick with any of the boys,” Krista said. “So, we thought and everyone else thought that, ‘Yes, it’s going to be a girl.’”

On the morning of April 8 – about 20 weeks into her pregnancy – Krista went to Regional West for a routine ultrasound appointment. She wasn’t used to going to her appointments without her husband; however, John stayed home to help their boys with their distance learning due to COVID-19.

“I had a weird feeling about going to the appointment alone,” Krista said. “It was almost like God was preparing me for something.”

Krista and the ultrasound technician talked while the ultrasound was being performed. The technician then grew quiet, for she was concerned about what she was seeing on the screen. The technician then told Krista to ask her husband, who had been using FaceTimeto watch the appointment, to come to the hospital.

“My stomach dropped because I knew whatever she needed to tell us wasn’t good,” Krista said.
