Chance Benton Barrett, 22 of Gering, passed away on November 20, 2021 after losing his battle with bipolar disorder. His memorial service will be December 4, 2021 at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Roger Gillming officiating. After the service, there will be a celebration of life at the Gering Civic Center. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.geringchapel.com for the Barrett family.
Chance was born September 16, 1999 to Craig and Carrie Barrett and was welcomed home by his sister, Kurstin Barrett. Chance graduated from Gering High School in 2018. He received his welding certificate from Eastern Wyoming College in 2020. He loved the Lord from an early age, often attending church in Kimball with his grandparents and later in Scottsbluff. His Bible is highlighted with his favorite verses.
Throughout his life, Chance loved his family and enjoyed spending time at the Barrett family farm. As a young child, he loved to play with trucks and plastic toy cattle. He even used a black marker to ensure that each one was “branded” with the family brand. As a teenager, he enjoyed working with cattle and seemed to be at peace in the quiet solitude of the pastures and fields. Chance loved to visit, share stories, and crack jokes with his family and friends. He always looked forward to a good, home cooked meal. Despite his thin build, he could eat as much as anyone. His soft voice and unmistakable laugh will be missed. His kind, caring spirit, beautiful smile, and bright blue eyes will forever be in our hearts.
Chance had a close relationship with his grandpa, Charles Brewer. They were cut from the same cloth; not only physically resembling each other but they share some of the same personality. It’s probably best that we don’t know all the trouble they got into together.
Chance had a sense of service and caring for others which is something he got from his parents. He would frequently volunteer at church to serve coffee and water to others. He had a loving and caring relationship with his great grandfather, George Jerred, whom he spent a lot of time with and always made sure grandpa had what he needed. Continuing his spirit of service, Chance chose to be an organ donor. While we mourn his loss, we find some peace in knowing that there are six families that will receive the blessing of Chance’s organ donation.
