OBITUARY: Glenn LeMoyne Speer of Scottsbluff

Glenn LeMoyne Speer of Scottsbluff began his next journey on October 14, 2021. Born November 18, 1931 in Broadwater, Nebraska, Glenn was one of twelve children of Edgar and Wilhelmena Speer (Meidlinger). Glenn graduated from Bayard High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.  After his Air Force service, he worked a long career as an automotive electrician.  In 1968, Glenn married Charlene Hutchinson and the two were married for the next 53 years.

Glenn led a full and fulfilling life. He was a dedicated husband and father, loving his five children, four grandchildren and great-grandchildren unconditionally.  An avid craftsman, he made toys and games for the grandchildren.  He was always up for a game of washers.  He couldn’t wait to treat visitors to a fishing excursion.  Fishing, thinking about fishing, and preparing to go fishing occupied much of Glenn’s time – in the trunk of his car he always kept wading boots, a tackle box and fishing rods in case he happened to pass a trout stream or pond that needed to be fished. Glenn also enjoyed hunting, camping, golf, Husker football, horseshoes, washers, yardwork, and restoring/repairing anything he could get his hands on.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Charlene, brother Don, daughters Ginger Huber (Steve) and Cathy Squires (Ron), sons Rick Abel (Lori), Rob Abel (Crista), and daughter-in-law Kathy Abel. Glenn’s grandchildren include Nick Squires (Holly), Kelley Stumpf (Tim), Whitney Smith (Angelo), Zach Abel (Kaitlin), Carly Abel, Macy Abel, and great grandchildren Lincoln Squires, Liberty Squires, and Faith Fazio. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, six sisters, son Randy, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Glenn’s name to Hunters for Youth, a Nebraska organization that introduces children to the Nebraska outdoors (https://huntersforyouth.org/donate/). Cards can be sent to Charlene at The Residency in Scottsbluff – 2100 Circle Dr., Apt 408, Scottsbluff, NE 69361. Dugan Kramer Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
