FEATURE: ‘I feel lucky to still be here’

Judy Johannsen of Scottsbluff knew something was terribly wrong when she suddenly lost all of her memory one day while shopping at Walmart. She sought medical help right away, and it’s a good thing she did because she discovered she had a baseball-sized tumor in her brain. She ended up having a total of three brain surgeries, and she’s doing much better today. Although she still struggles with some memory loss from time to time, she’s grateful she’s still alive, and she’s also grateful for what going through her adversity has taught her about life.

SCOTTSBLUFF – One warm afternoon in early July 2018, Judy Johannsen grabbed her car keys and headed out the door to make a quick trip to Walmart in Scottsbluff.

She was looking for a specific product, so when she arrived at the store, she asked a sales associate for help locating the item.

“I remember saying, ‘Do you have … and then I couldn’t finish the question,” she said.

Not only did she forget the question, she also suddenly didn’t know where she was or why she was even there.

“I didn’t know anything,” she said. “My mind went totally blank.”
