Oliver William “Bill” Layton, 94, of Gering, passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Mitchell Care Center. His memorial graveside service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, January 24, 2022, at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. In lieu of any flowers, memorials in Bill’s honor may be made to West-Way Christian Church in Scottsbluff or the donor’s choice. Bill was born on March 18, 1927, in Silver Creek, NE to Chancey and Mertyle (Black) Layton. He served his country in the United States Army, then received his education and graduated with his master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado, which he dedicated to the development of young minds for over 34 years teaching at Gering High School. Along the way, he married Dorothy Boyd in Denver, CO on June 3, 1955. They loved spending time together.
Bill enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, traveling, and dedicating time to important projects. He spent over 500 hours helping with the construction of West-Way Christian Church.
Bill is survived by his son Steve Layton.
His parents, wife Dorothy, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters preceded him in death.
