Cecilia Sanchez’s husband, Lawrence, was a resident at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff for three years before he passed away in 2015. Since then, Cecilia, of Bayard, has continued to make weekly trips to the Veterans Home, for she loves bringing joy to residents there by playing cards or bingo with them, giving them candy bars, or simply enjoying conversations with them.

BAYARD – Cecilia Sanchez stands with a big, warm smile as she gazes at all the residents at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff who have come to the activities room there to play bingo.
Sanchez, like she always does when she’s at the Veterans Home on bingo days, holds a large basket that she’s filled with Butterfingers, Hersheys and a variety of other candy bars. She’ll make her way around the room just before the games begin, greeting each resident before offering him or her a candy bar or two.
“It’s just something I like to do – to make them feel better,” said the 81-year-old Sanchez, who lives in Bayard and drives herself to the Veterans Home – usually multiple times each week. “Talking to them and doing something nice for them makes me feel good,” she said.
