Overcoming a tornado – and then cancer

Joy Rafferty and her family faced heartache in 2017 when a tornado struck the area where they live, destroying their home, vehicles, and many other buildings and items on their ranch near Bayard. They overcame that devastation, but they encountered more adversity last year when Joy was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Joy didn’t get down, though, as she stayed positive and determined while beating cancer. Although the last three years have brought tears and tough times for the Rafferty family, Joy said the adversity they’ve faced has made her a better, stronger person in many ways.

BAYARD – Late in the spring of 2019, Joy Rafferty of Bayard noticed a small lump on one of her breasts. She wasn’t too concerned about it, though.

“I just thought it was probably some sort of fatty tissue,” she said. “I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.”

Just to be sure, though, Rafferty made an appointment to have a mammogram done at Regional West in Scottsbluff on June 15, 2019.

The results of the procedure concerned her doctor.

“He said, ‘I don’t want to scare you because I don’t have any concrete evidence yet, but the way it looks, it doesn’t look normal,” she said.
