Passionate about helping kids in 4-H

Ashley (Stevens) Fenning, a 2012 Bridgeport High School graduate, enjoyed lots of success showing livestock during the 10 years she participated in 4-H in Morrill County. She’s now helping other youth enjoy a memorable experience in 4-H as the Nebraska Extension Assistant for 4-H in Box Butte County.

ALLIANCE – Toward the end of Ashley (Stevens) Fenning’s career at Bridgeport High School, she started to think seriously about pursuing a career as a pharmacist.

“I kind of liked the medical stuff in high school, but since I didn’t like dealing with blood, I thought pharmacy would be a good career for me to go into,” said Fenning, who graduated from Bridgeport High School in 2012.

After going to school and playing basketball at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff for a couple years, Fenning continued her educational and basketball career at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo.

Although Fenning was still interested in becoming a pharmacist, Colorado Mesa didn’t offer a pharmacy tech program, so she began exploring other career options. She decided to go into biology, with plans to become a high school science teacher.

“I thought that would be fun, especially since I could maybe also help coach volleyball and basketball,” she said.

After completing her basketball eligibility at Colorado Mesa, Fenning transferred to Chadron State College, where she graduated in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in general biology.

Something happened in the summer of 2017, however, that caused Fenning to re-think her career plan.
