Pitching in by making masks

When Breanna Rein of Gering learned about the severe shortage of masks in the nation, she started making her own fabric masks, which she’s been giving away for free to medical personnel, kids, elderly, and other people who need a mask during the COVID-19 outbreak.

GERING – Around mid-March, Breanna Rein of Gering received a message from one of her friends, Heather Shockley, suggesting that she sew some masks.

Initially, Rein thought her friend was joking.

“It seemed far-fetched that people would actually need me to make masks,” she said.

A couple days later, however, Rein started getting tagged by people on Facebook, who were sharing stories about a severe shortage of masks across the country due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Some hospitals and other medical facilities were running low or running out of masks, putting some staff members in dangerous situations.

“I was surprised when I saw that there was a huge need for more masks,” Rein said. “When I learned what was happening – that some places were running out of masks or that masks weren’t available for some people, I was like, ‘OK, I can help.’”
