After falling in the district finals last year, Bayard came into this season determined to make another strong run at a state tournament berth. The hard work the team put in during the offseason has certainly been paying off for the talented and experienced Tigers, who have enjoyed their best start to a season in more than 20 years.

BAYARD – When the Bayard High School volleyball team made it to the district finals last season, it was quite a moment for the Tigers.
They felt good to make it that far, especially since Bayard hadn’t advanced that far in years. But at the same time, they couldn’t help but feel a little heartbroken to fall just shy of qualifying for the state tournament after losing to eventual state champion Oakland-Craig.
Fourth-year Bayard coach Tabitha Unzicker encouraged her players who didn’t graduate last season to remember that feeling and use it as motivation for this season.
“The girls worked really hard to make it to the district finals last year – I was very proud of them – but they wanted more,” Unzicker said. “Losing to Oakland-Craig showed us where we want to be. And in order to take the next step, our players knew they needed to keep working hard for this season.”
