MINATARE – When Val Baker of Minatare was a kid, she set a goal to be the first female command pilot of a space shuttle.

“I would have been close to reaching that goal had I not broken my leg. I was on the fast track to becoming a jet pilot, and there was a potential path from there,” said Baker. “But, as they say, close is only for horseshoes and hand grenades.”
