PRIDE IN AG: Rising up the ranks in cattle showing

Sidney High School sophomore Sidney Allard has been showing cattle for years, but she got a lot more serious about it and successful at it last year after she started working with Josie, a Charolais heifer who’s won or placed high at numerous cattle shows since November. Her success has even lifted Allard to the top of the points standings in the Junior Nebraska Cattleman’s Association. But while Allard has enjoyed the success she’s had showing cattle in Nebraska and other states, what she’s most excited about is her future with cattle – working as an embryologist to reproduce top quality and even award-winning cattle.

SIDNEY – Sidney Allard didn’t necessarily grow up with a strong desire to own and show a white heifer someday.

But after showing a big, white, cross-bred steer a couple years ago, Allard became interested in owning and showing a Charolais, which is a large, purebred cattle breed that was developed in France. They’re known for their white color.

“They’re hard to keep clean, but for some reason, I was really drawn to them after working with that steer,” said Allard, a sophomore at Sidney High School. “I told my mom, ‘I really want a Charolais heifer.”
