SCOTTSBLUFF – Trevor Schwartz, a senior at Scottsbluff High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for October, sponsored by Kristy Culek Agency, LLC-American Family Insurance. Schwartz is one of the top football players in Class B. He plays tight end and defensive end. He’s in his third year as a starter. Schwartz is also a talented basketball player. He’s looking to start for the second straight year as a power forward. Other school activities he’s involved in are DECA and National Honor Society. He has a 3.9 GPA. Outside of school, he’s part of the youth group at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering, and he also helps with his family’s non-profit organization, Team Ashtyn Foundation, which serves childhood cancer families in the Panhandle and Eastern Wyoming area, providing magical moments for children from birth to age 26. After graduating from high school, Schwartz wants to attend college to play football and major in health science. His parents are Tory and Jennifer Schwartz. For being named an athlete of the month, Trevor will receive a gift card for a free drink at Scooter’s Coffee.

Q: How pleased are you with the way your football career has gone so far?

SCHWARTZ: “I grew up in a basketball household, so I didn’t start playing football until my seventh-grade year. Then when I transferred from Gering to Scottsbluff, I didn’t know if I would keep playing football my freshman year. But Coach [Joe] Benson talked me into going out, and I’m glad he did because I’ve had a lot of fun playing football, and I think it’s made me the young man I am today. It’s taught me a lot about dedication and working hard – things that will help me for the rest of my life. I think it’s also helped me in school as far as getting my homework done and getting good grades.”

Q: What were your personal goals coming into this football season?

SCHWARTZ: “In a run-heavy offense, it’s hard to set goals based on yardage and touchdowns. So, my biggest goals were just to keep improving as a player and to do whatever I could to help our team.”

Q: How impressed are you with this year’s Scottsbluff football team?

SCHWARTZ: “We have a bunch of good athletes on the team. It’s a team full of hard-working young men who strive to be as good as we can be. We go hard during practices, and then we’re ready to battle on Friday nights. I feel like we’ve really come together as a family, and we have a great coaching staff. Everyone gives it their all on Friday nights.”
