‘She has a way of melting your heart’

Whitney Adams, a 9-year-old girl from Harrison who was born with Down syndrome, is considered by many to be one of Sioux County High School’s biggest sports fans. She’s also well known for her smile and cheerful personality – and for her special ability to bring lots of joy and comfort to people in her community and in the surrounding area.

HARRISON – Whitney Adams was sitting in the stands at Sioux County High School one day, smiling and having fun as she cheered for the Warrior junior varsity girls basketball team.

Whitney’s mom, Maggie, who’s a science teacher at the high school, had to leave the gym for a few minutes to grab something from her classroom. She knew Whitney, who has Down syndrome, would be fine in the stands, surrounded by family and friends.

When Maggie returned to the gym, she looked over where Whitney, who’s 9 now, had been sitting. She wasn’t there. Maggie then spotted her daughter on the bench, sitting right next to the head coach, Barry Swisher, who’s also Sioux County High School’s activities director and principal.

“At first, I was mortified when I saw her over there with the game going on,” Maggie said. “I was worried that she might be disturbing them.”

It was quite the opposite, actually.
