‘This is what I’ve always wanted to do’

Zach Morgan of Scottsbluff has a long list of family members, including his dad and grandpas, who served in the military. Morgan has always wanted to follow in their footsteps by serving in the Army himself someday, and he’ll soon get that opportunity, as he’ll report for basic training later this summer at Fort Benning in Georgia.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Zach Morgan was only about 4 years old when his dad, Jake Morgan, took him to visit Fort Benning, a United States Army base in Georgia.

The visit came just a few years after Jake had served in the infantry in the Army from 1991 to 1995. He had spent quite a bit of time at Fort Benning during both his training and active duty.

Jake was excited to show his son around the military base. They spent about three days there, visiting with other military personnel and checking out different sites. Zach, who’s now 23, remembers the trip like it was yesterday.

“It was such a cool experience,” he said. “I got to see the soldiers training, and my dad showed me the confidence tower that he had trained on. I also got to put paint on my face – just like the soldiers did – and I had fun doing pull ups on the pull-up bar.”

The highlight of the trip for Zach, however, was seeing the tanks up-close.

“I’ve always been interested in tanks because that’s what my grandpa [James Morgan] operated when he was in the Army,” Zach said. “There were one or two tanks that they let me go in. I was having the time of my life.”
