‘This means so much to me’

Deb and Mark Pieper were devastated when their ranch house near Hay Springs burned down two days before Christmas. Although they were heartbroken to lose not only their house but also all of their important and sentimental items, like pictures and other crucial keepsakes of their son who passed away 11 years ago, they’ve been moving forward in a positive way. Helping uplift them have been their family and friends, including 75 quilters who made a large, special quilt that was recently presented to Deb as a gesture of hope and love.

HAY SPRINGS – Deb Pieper of Hay Springs woke up excited on Monday, Dec. 23.

She looked forward to picking up a rug that her sister was giving to her, and she also looked forward to traveling to Rapid City that day with her sister, who had an eye appointment there.

Pieper had talked her husband, Mark, into driving with her the 11 miles into Hay Springs to pick up the rug at her sister’s house. Afterward, Deb and her sister took off in a separate vehicle to Rapid City.

When Mark got back to their house on the ranch, his heart quickly sank. He was devastated by what he saw.

“Our house was on fire,” Deb said.
