FEATURE: A thrilling journey hiking every 14er in Colorado Rockies

About 11 years ago, Amy Holzworth of Scottsbluff was asked by a friend if she would like to hike a 14er in Colorado. She did, and she enjoyed the experience so much that she wanted to hike more 14ers. She eventually set a goal to hike all 58 14ers in Colorado, and she accomplished that feat last summer. That wasn’t the end of her hiking adventures, though, as she has plans this summer to continue hiking tall mountains. She said she’s developed a passion for hiking challenging – and sometimes treacherous – mountains because it gives her a great opportunity to relieve some stress, bond with friends and family members who go on hikes with her, and strengthen her relationship with God even more.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Up until 11 years ago, Amy Holzworth of Scottsbluff had never put too much thought into hiking a 14er in the Rocky Mountains.

To be sure, she loved spending time in the mountains, including snow skiing and doing some light hiking on mostly paved trails with her family. But hiking up one of the tallest mountains in Colorado had never really crossed her mind.

That changed, though, one day when one of her friends at Mitchell Berean Church, Diane Mathis, asked Holzworth and other ladies who were involved in a women’s Bible study group there if they would be interested in joining her on a hike up a 14er in Colorado.

Holzworth liked the idea, especially since she’s enjoyed exercising and staying active after being a three-sport athlete at Newcastle High School in Newcastle, Nebraska, and then playing volleyball and basketball for two years at Grace University in Omaha. She frequently runs, bikes, lifts weights, and swims.

“Hiking a 14er is something that can be appealing to a group of ex-athletes,” Holzworth said. “I thought it would be a fun challenge. Plus, it sounded like it would be a cool getaway.”
