‘We’re really just getting started here’

Kendra and Thomas Mitchell, who took over the famous Potter Sundry cafe last year shortly after losing their jobs at Cabela’s in Sidney, are eager to grow the ‘Home of the Tin Roof Sundae’ business in the friendly, small town they’ve grown to love

POTTER – When Kendra and Thomas Mitchell heard last year that the owner of the famous and popular Potter Sundry was leaving and that the business might close soon, their hearts sank.

Not only did they hate the thought of a cafe that had served the Potter community for more than seven decades coming to an end, but they also cringed at the thought of the other people working there losing their jobs.

The Mitchells knew first-hand the frustration, anxiety, and sadness of losing a good job. Both were part of the large group of people who lost their jobs last year at Cabela’s in Sidney. Both accepted buyouts.

“We really didn’t want to see more people lose their jobs,” Kendra said. “We also didn’t want our community to be without a family, friendly cafe in town. It’s an important part of our community. It’s not just a place to eat – it’s also a gathering place where people can sit down and enjoy visiting with each other.”
