Encouraging lonely people through her writing

Joy Seltzer of Gering has always loved to write. Twenty years ago, she began writing columns to provide encouragement for lonely people, especially prisoners. She wrote an inspirational book that was published eight years ago, and she recently published another book, called ‘Jesus in Jail,’ that she hopes encourages even more people who feel lonely.

GERING – Joy Seltzer of Gering remembers getting interested in writing when she was in second grade.

“I wrote a short poem, and it was even included in our school’s paper,” she said. “I was so excited.”

Seltzer, who’s 89, continued to write after that, mostly for her personal enjoyment. She remembers writing about her classmates’ personalities in 10th grade, and later in life she even wrote a book about her cat.

“Cats are funny animals, so each chapter was humorous,” she said. “I’ve always had fun with writing.”
