FEATURE: Bayard girl says, ‘My dad has been my inspiration to get through the tough times’

Bayard High School senior Theresa Schiavone had a hard life growing up, and her world really turned upside down last summer when her father, who was the one and only person she felt close to, passed away in a motorcycle accident. That left Schiavone devastated and heartbroken, and it also caused her to move on in life on her own, including living by herself in a house in Bayard. Despite the adversity she’s gone through, though, she’s managed to stay positive and driven, and she’s on pace to graduate from high school in May. She also has big plans for the future, including attending Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design on an art scholarship.

BAYARD – Theresa Schiavone can’t help but grow a little animated when she thinks back to her days of growing up in Denver.

“My childhood was completely wild,” she said. “It was probably too wild.”

As a young kid, she remembers often staying up late – sometimes until the early hours of the morning – hanging out with her dad, Louis, a single parent, and all of his buddies.

“My dad was a wild guy, so in between working as a construction manager and flipping houses, he would throw parties that had 100-plus people there,” she said. “My dad played the guitar, so he and some other musicians would play music on a deck, and I would be up at 1 in the morning eating pizza with them. Sometimes they would even let me play the drums.”
