Clyde was born at the family home one mile east of Mitchell on January 28, 1927 to Clyde and Mary Gompert Johnson.  He attended Mitchell schools, graduating with the class of 1945. He also took two agriculture short courses at Scottsbluff Junior College.  After graduation, he farmed and fed cattle and sheep in Sioux County for forty years.

Clyde married Evelyn Thorson on July 6, 1973 and they built a home in Sioux County, where they lived until 1989, when they moved to Scottsbluff. They later made their home at the Residency. He was a member of the Federated Church of Mitchell and was treasurer for the Mitchell Rural fire District for fifteen years.  He enjoyed flying his shared private airplane out of the Mitchell Airport and obtained his Private Pilot’s license.  He continued to fly for many years until he sold his airplane.  Another hobby was riding his Indian motorcycle, which he bought in Omaha and rode west to Mitchell, at times encountering four inches of snow and slush.  Clyde loved to travel! He visited Alaska three times, the Phillipines, China, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Italy.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 48 years, Evelyn, of Scottsbluff and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, his sisters, Elberta, Eva and Eloise, his brother Edgar and infant brother Herman.
