FEATURE: Despite having 4 heart attacks, 2 amputations, and lots of other trials in his life, Sidney man still feels ‘incredibly blessed’

Longtime Sidney Public Schools music teacher Dave Mead suffered through some pretty traumatic experiences as a child, and he’s faced an incredible number of trials in the last 17 years, too, including four heart attacks, a bad car wreck, a battle with peritonitis, a near-fatal allergic reaction, and two amputations. Through it all, however, Mead has maintained a positive attitude, and the reason why, he said, is because of his faith and family and the amazing impact that music has had in his life.

SIDNEY – Every day that Dave Mead wakes up, he can’t help but crack a big smile.

He’s happy to still be alive, and his job as a music teacher at Sidney Public Schools is a big reason why.

“Music has saved my life so many times,” he said.

Literally. Yes, literally.

After avoiding any major setbacks health-wise his first 40 years of life, the now 58-year-old Mead has an incredible – almost unbelievable – list of obstacles he’s overcome in the last 17 years. Even his wife of 33 years, Jennifer, who shares the music teaching duties at Sidney Middle School and Sidney High School with him, finds it hard to believe all the adversity her husband has faced and conquered in the last couple decades.

“I’ve joked with my friends how many lives he’s used up,” she said. “I tell people he’s inexplicably still alive.”
