PRIDE IN AG: Mitchell man carving out a niche in agriculture

VALERIE ERETH

MITCHELL – Colton Keller was raised on a farm near Mitchell, where they grew irrigated row crops and had a small herd of cows. Keller was involved in 4-H and showing 4-H calves at the Scotts Bluff County Fair. He is now the plant manager at Kelley Bean Company while carving out a niche in agriculture raising club calves. Club/show calves are bred and raised for the show ring, whether 4-H, FFA or for “steer jockeys.” Steer jockeys buy and resell these calves for some of the bigger rings or stock shows.

Q: Tell me about yourself and your operation?

KELLER: “Well, I am 29 years old and am a cattle producer/show calf breeder. I had 20 head of cows, and then last year I bought Billy DeBoer’s herd of cows. Now, I have 80 cows.”
