SIDNEY – Jaylee Shaw, a senior at Sidney High School, has been named First State Bank’s Female Student of the Week. She’s involved in basketball, track & field, National Honor Society (treasurer), student council, and science club. She has a 4.0 GPA. Her parents are Tyler and Mandy Shaw.

Q: What does it mean to you to be part of National Honor Society? Also, how important is it to you to get excellent grades?

SHAW: “Getting good grades has always been very important to me. I really enjoy being in NHS.”

Q: How exciting is it to have a 4.0 GPA going into your last few months of high school?

SHAW: “It’s pretty special to me.”

Q: Was maintaining a 4.0 GPA one of your goals entering high school?

SHAW: “Yes, it was one of my goals.”

Q: How challenging has it been to maintain a 4.0 GPA?

SHAW: “My junior year was pretty challenging. This year is kind of challenging, too.”

Q: What’s been the most difficult class you’ve had in high school up to this point?

SHAW: “Probably either calculus or chemistry II.”

Q: What is your favorite non-sports activity?

SHAW: “I like NHS. One of our choices is mentoring either a third/fourth grader or a fifth/sixth grader. I really enjoy it.”

Q: What is your favorite subject?

SHAW: “Probably science.”

Q: What are your plans after you graduate from high school?

SHAW: “I want to become an orthodontist.”

Q: Why do you want to become an orthodontist?

SHAW: “I had braces, and I enjoyed going to the appointments. Also, I started job shadowing Dr. [Sami] Webb last year, and I really liked it. She explained things to me really well, and I liked seeing how she always makes the patients feel good and how she talks to them. Also, I enjoy seeing how much [orthodontics] can change not only people’s teeth but also their smile and how they feel about themselves.”

Q: Where do you plan to go to college?

SHAW: “I’m not sure yet, but probably either Kearney or Chadron.”

Q: Outside of your school activities, what do you like to do for fun?

SHAW: “I like to spend time with my family and friends. I also like to travel.”

Q: Have you lived in Sidney your entire life?

SHAW: “We moved here when I was 3.”

Q: How much have you enjoyed growing up in Sidney?

SHAW: “I love it. Everyone is very supportive.”

Q: In your opinion, who is the kindest student at Sidney High School this year?

SHAW: “Probably Sarah Wamsley. She’s a senior. She’s always nice to everyone. She always compliments people.”

Q: Name one person who you think is a big difference-maker in Sidney?

SHAW: “I think the staff at Regional West Clinic. They’re always so kind to people, and if someone needs help, they’re always willing to do whatever they can to help.”

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Sidney?

SHAW: “Runza.”

Q: What do you like to order there?

SHAW: “Chicken strips – with ranch, of course.”

Q: Favorite TV show?

SHAW: “All American.”

Q: Favorite type of music?

SHAW: “Country.”

Q: If you could give a shoutout to one business in Sidney, which one would it be and why?
