FEATURE: Gering woman says ‘it was truly a miracle’

When Leslie Cook of Gering got pregnant with her first child in 2015, she said it ended up saving her life because being pregnant is what led to her finding out she had kidney cancer with enough time to beat it. Cook said she received another big blessing two years ago, when she was able to overcame skin cancer on her face. Although Cook has gone through some extremely difficult times in the last seven years, she said she wakes up every day with a big smile, for she knows how lucky she is to still be alive and enjoy everything that this ‘precious life’ has to offer, including raising two little kids with her loving husband.

GERING – Leslie Cook of Gering woke up on Feb. 9, 2015, not feeling the greatest. She didn’t think too much of it, though, figuring it had something to do with her being 32 weeks pregnant with her first child, Lily.

The dull ache Cook was feeling, however, hadn’t gone away by the time she got to work that morning at the Scottsbluff Surgery Center, where she was a nurse. In fact, the pain gradually got worse.

“One of the other nurses said I looked bad,” said Cook, who’s now the director of health services at WEL-Life in Scottsbluff. “She suggested that I go check my temperature.”
