FEATURE: ‘I’m glad I pursued my dream’

Jeff Winkler of Gering was never involved in the school band or choir growing up, and he never took any formal guitar lessons. But he did love music, and he loved trying to figure out how to play songs on his guitar on his own. Although he often thought about how cool it would be to play the electric guitar in a band, he never thought it would happen, especially due to his inexperience playing the guitar. However, 21 years ago, Winkler and a friend decided to start a rock band, called Loaded Dice, and remarkably, that band still exists today, with the 54-year-old Winkler performing as the only original member of the popular local band. He said he’s glad he didn’t let his lack of a musical background stop him from pursuing his dream.

GERING – Watching Jeff Winkler play the electric guitar, it would be easy to assume he’s had years of formal training.

The 54-year-old Gering man, however, says he’s never taken any formal guitar lessons. Not even one.

“I really don’t know what I’m doing when I have a guitar in my hands,” Winkler said with a laugh. “But, fortunately, I’ve been able to do just enough to make it work.”
