FEATURE: ‘Nothing makes me as happy as cooking’

Jan Cortinas developed a passion for cooking at an early age, and over the years, the 66-year-old Scottsbluff woman has enjoyed cooking for a number of local restaurants. She’s now in the fifth year of the most fun adventure of her life, baking and cooking full-time for her niece, Jamie Taylor, at The Mixing Bowl Cafe in Gering.

GERING – When Jamie Taylor opened The Mixing Bowl Cafe in Gering about seven years ago, she tried to persuade her aunt, Jan Cortinas, to join her staff as a cook.

Taylor admired her aunt’s passion for baking and cooking, and Cortinas had lots of experience as a cook, too, for she had worked at a number of restaurants in the area.

“I thought, ‘If we really want to have an even better bakery case, we need to have things made the same day they’re sold.’ I knew my aunt could do a great job,” Taylor said. “I knew I could trust her to come in early in the mornings and get things taken care of.”
