HEMINGFORD – Margaret and Patrick Hartman are the owners of Fallen Timber & Co., which opened in downtown Hemingford on April 8. The Hartmans run most of their businesses out of Fallen Timber & Co., including Margaret’s “Hartman Electrolysis & Skin” business, and Patrick’s “Flannel Brothers” business, which includes tree trimming, tree removal, stump grinding, landscaping, and chimney cleaning, inspection and installation. In addition, the Hartmans are a distributor for wood burning stoves, gas and electric fire places, and inserts, and their showroom for those products is located inside Fallen Timber & Co. at 804 Box Butte Ave. The Hartmans have lived in Hemingford for 11 years. Patrick, 38, is a 2002 Hemingford High School graduate, and Margaret, 36, graduated from Marshfield High School in Marshfield, Wisconsin, in 2004. Margaret and Patrick, who were married in 2009, have three children: Brooke, 11; Autumn, 5, and Brecken, 2.

Q: Describe Fallen Timber & Co. for people who haven’t visited the store yet.

MARGARET: “It’s our storefront. It’s like a cozy, little brick and mortar building. I have my treatment room in there for electrolysis and facials. We have a showroom for the wood burning stoves, gas and electric fireplaces, and inserts along with a little bit of retail space in there. We try to carry U.S. made items, a lot of home-based businesses. We have Nebraska-made candles, for instance, as well as Amish goods, and products from different artists like pottery, cutting and charcuterie boards, earrings, and pure Wisconsin maple syrup. We tried to set it up so if someone wants a little gift, they’ll know where it’s coming from.”

Q: How did Fallen Timber & Co. come about?

MARGARET: “The biggest drive behind it was me being an esthetician. I was doing electrolysis treatments in my house, but in order to follow state regulations to do facials as an esthetician, I needed to be set up in a certified salon. There are a lot of restrictions when you’re trying to do that operating out of your house. So, I started looking for a place where I could operate out of. I was leasing a place in Hay Springs, but then when COVID was going on, we had already bought this building in downtown Hemingford and decided it was time to renovate. I knew I would be able to do facials and skin treatment here once it became a certified salon. So, Fallen Timber & Co. is the name of the salon, but it’s also the name of the storefront. When we were trying to come up with a name, we wanted something that was kind of generic so it could encompass all of our businesses. Even though I operate my business here, my husband has a little bit of his stuff here, too, and we even have an office here that someone could lease.”
