FEATURE: ‘One of the best feelings you can get is from helping people’

About 35 years ago, Lonnie Miller wanted to do his part to help make a difference in his community, so he decided to join the Scottsbluff/Gering Lions Club . The 67-year-old Miller is still volunteering for the local service organization, which helps kids and adults in the area with their vision needs. Miller said he’s just as passionate about serving on the Lions Club as he’s ever been, for there’s nothing he enjoys more than helping people in need.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Not too long after graduating from Kearney State College in 1976, Lonnie Miller landed a job working for the Nebraska Department of Revenue.

Miller, a certified public accountant, did some training at the Nebraska State Capitol building in Lincoln for a few months. He then was told the department needed help at three of its offices in the state: Lincoln, Norfolk, and Scottsbluff.

Since Miller grew up in eastern Nebraska – he graduated from Meridian High School in Daykin, Nebraska, in 1972 – he preferred to work in Lincoln. His second choice, he told administrators, was Norfolk, and his third choice was Scottsbluff.

“You can guess where I ended up,” Miller said with a laugh.
