SCOTTSBLUFF – Teyla Huff, a senior at Scottsbluff High School, is Nspire Today!’s Female Student of the Month for April. She ranks first in her class with a weighted GPA of 4.16, and she’s in her third year in National Honor Society. She’s a talented musician, playing both the flute and the piccolo in band. She’s been playing the flute since fifth grade, and she started playing the piccolo her junior year. She was selected to the Oregon Trail Honor Band both this year and last year. Also, she’s the president of Tri-M, a music honor society. She’s also excelled in math. A three-year participant in the school’s Math Club, Huff was on the club’s problem solving team that competed well at UNL Math Day in February. She also placed first with her team at Data Driven, a statistics competition that was held in Lincoln in March. In July she’ll travel with her Mu Alpha Theta team to Las Vegas to compete in a national competition. Mu Alpha Theta is a math honor society that she’s been part of for three years. She’s also been involved in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) for four years and has earned numerous awards at the state leadership conference, including chemistry this year and medical math last year. The other school activity she’s been participating in is cheerleading. Earlier this school year she became the school’s first ever cheerleader to be a drum major in band. Outside of school, she volunteers for the CatPacks food program, and she’s helped with several community health events. She’s also done job shadowing with surgeons at Kimball Health Services. After high school, she plans to attend Chadron State College via the RHOP program. She was accepted into CSC’s pre-med program. Thanks to being chosen for the RHOP program, Huff will automatically be enrolled into medical school at UNMC in Omaha after she graduates from Chadron State College. For a career, she wants to be a pathologist. Her parents are Danielle and Sterling Huff.

Q: How has your senior year of school been going?

HUFF: “It’s been going pretty well. I’ve been really busy because of the activities I’m involved with, but I couldn’t have asked for my senior year to go any better than it has. It’s been such a perfect year. I’ve had so many great experiences, and I’ve met a lot of great people. I’m really grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had.”

Q: Out of all the activities you’re involved in, which one do you enjoy the most and explain why.

HUFF: “I’ve definitely enjoyed being in HOSA the most because it aligns with my career field, and I love giving back to the community that’s given so much to me. I feel great being the president of HOSA because last year our advisor of 20 years left to go to Omaha, and there wasn’t anybody to take over her position. So, I took it upon myself to help keep the organization going. I didn’t want to see everything the previous advisor built go away.”

Q: What’s another school activity you really enjoy?

HUFF: “Definitely band. It’s helped me develop leadership skills, and I’ve made a lot of friends through band. I think it’s also taught me the importance of being a well rounded person, and it’s taught me that if someone tells you that you can’t do something, why not at least try it? I love the feeling of breaking barriers and proving people wrong.”
