Feeling fantastic at 80

Even at 80 years old, Bob Waddell of Gering continues to do the activities he loves to do, like working in the yard and playing tennis. He said the keys to him maintaining an active lifestyle include doing tai chi and other exercises like running stairs and doing curls with a bowling ball. Another reason he feels so good physically and mentally, he said, is that he places a big focus on maintaining a healthy diet.

GERING – Every year Bob Waddell of Gering visits with a nurse for a routine health checkup.

The 80-year-old Waddell couldn’t help but chuckle at his last checkup when the nurse asked him how he felt.

“I told her, ‘I feel great. I can still run and jump,’” he said.

The nurse raised her eyebrows, for she was surprised.

“She said, ‘Really, you can still jump?’” Waddell recalled. “She then said, ‘OK, let’s see.’”

So, Waddell proceeded to jump high into the air. After he landed, the nurse cringed before asking him, “Doesn’t that hurt?”

Waddell smiled and replied calmly, “No, it doesn’t hurt. I feel really good.”

It’s true. Even at 80 years old, Waddell feels wonderful physically, and it shows with all the activities he does every week.

“I still feel young,” he said. “It feels good to be able to do whatever I need to do physically, whether it’s taking care of things around the house or doing activities I enjoy, like playing tennis.”

He then added with a laugh, “Most 80-year-old men can’t do what I can do.”
