‘She has a special way of bringing joy to the people she’s around’

Heather Mills of Torrington was born with Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic neurological disorder that leads to severe autism and other mental and physical impairments. That hasn’t stopped Mills, however, from smiling often and doing what she can to bring happiness to people and also to the animals at Waggin’ Tails Animal Shelter.

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – About three or four times a week, Heather Mills heads over to Waggin’ Tails Shelter in Torrington to help take care of the cats and dogs.

She’ll clean out litter boxes, she’ll make sure the animals have food and fresh water, and she’ll also take dogs for walks, among other duties.

Mills, who lives in Torrington, has been volunteering at Waggin’ Tails Shelter for about nine years.

“She absolutely loves being around those animals,” said Heather’s mom, Rita Mills. “She’s a big animal lover, and she loves helping to take care of them and playing with them. If she had it her way, she would have all of those animals at our house.”
