BRIDGEPORT — For weeks, the wind had been the warning.

It wasn’t subtle. It howled across open country, rattled structures, bent grass flat against the prairie, and dried everything it touched. For the firefighters of Bridgeport, it wasn’tjust weather — it was a signal.

“We’ve all been pretty conscious of the wind,” Bridgeport Fire Chief Casey Sides said. “Knowing that when the tones drop, you’ve got to roll.”

So, they prepared. Equipment checks. Readiness drills. Watching forecasts. Waiting.

They knew something was coming. They just didn’t know when — or where. The moment didn’t arrive cleanly. It rarely does.

Sides and his crew were already responding to a semi rollover near Angora Junction when everything changed. The initial call suggested the driver was out of the truck. The urgency shifted slightly. But then, almost instantly, another tone dropped.

A fire.
