Kyler Brunz of Scottsbluff received heartbreaking news in 2015 when he found out he had liver cancer. He had a successful liver transplant surgery in 2016 and continues to do well now. Although battling liver cancer is the toughest thing he’s ever had to do, he said going through that experience made him a stronger, better person, and it also made him want to enjoy every day to its fullest.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Not long after starting a new job as a corrections officer for the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln in March 2015, Kyler Brunz began to feel ill.
He tried to shrug it off at first.
“I just figured I had caught some sort of bug since we were still in the flu season,” he said.
Wanting to get rid of “the bug” as quickly as he could, he went to an urgent care clinic in Lincoln. The doctor there noticed that Brunz’s leg was a little swollen and recommended that he go to a hospital to get it checked out. He did, and he was given an antibiotic.
The next day, Brunz, a 2009 Gering High School graduate, went to work at the Nebraska State Penitentiary, and he began climbing a high tower to get to his post for the day. However, he couldn’t make it to the top of the tower.
“My leg had gotten worse, so I could hardly walk up the tower,” he said.
