‘I really think I’ve found my niche’

Taylor Severyn wanted to become an elementary school teacher when he graduated from Mitchell High School in 2011. He ended up changing his mind, however, because he developed an interest in becoming an emergency medical services worker. He’s now in his sixth year of volunteering for the Mitchell Fire Department and also working as an advanced EMT at Valley Ambulance Services in Scottsbluff – tasks that allow him to fulfill his desire to help people in the area that he grew up in.

MITCHELL – Taylor Severyn knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life after he graduated from Mitchell High School in 2011.

“I really wanted to be an elementary school teacher,” he said.

But after taking some classes at Western Nebraska Community College and learning more about a career in education, Severyn started to lose interest in teaching.

“I didn’t like how you couldn’t really use your own methods to teach. You basically had to teach for a test,” he said. “Once I realized that, I knew that teaching wasn’t going to be my cup of tea.”

So, Severyn starting thinking about other careers he might enjoy. One of them was being a fireman, mostly because the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department had helped him when he was involved in a rollover accident in the fall of 2011. Severyn was driving home on Spring Creek Road just east of Mitchell after getting off work one day, and his vehicle, which he said was out of alignment, jerked to the right. It hit the edge of the road, causing his vehicle to lose control and flip over into the ditch.
