ALLIANCE – For most high school wrestlers, the idea of standing on top of the podium at the state tournament feels like the final destination — the ultimate reward at the end of years of practices, long bus rides, early mornings, and hard matches. For Coy Childers, that moment happened early. He won a state championship as a freshman. Instead of relaxing into that achievement, he’s spent the months since wrestling as if he’s still trying to prove he belongs.
That simple fact carries weight, but it also carries pressure. He’s not hiding from expectations this winter. If anything, he’s welcoming them. “Practice is good,” he said. “There’s a lot of pressure riding on the season, but that’s good. We’re working hard. I’m focusing on a lot of technique, a lot of things I didn’t really do last year — patching those holes in my armor and really focusing on what I need to fix to be more dominant and showing that I’m here. I’m ready to show I’m not going away.”
