MARK KESZLER / Nspire Today!
For nearly a decade, Laura and David Whelchel have welcomed travelers and locals alike to Laura Lee’s Double L Country Store, a charming farm-to-table restaurant and gift shop tucked away in the countryside. Established in 2015, this family-owned destination has become famous for its homemade meals, fresh ingredients, and warm hospitality.
At Double L, everything is homemade and homegrown, using locally sourced flour, meat, and honey. Their breakfasts are a customer favorite, celebrated for their fresh, from-scratch quality. Burgers are also a big hit, but it’s the pies and cakes that have truly put this small-town eatery on the map.
Despite its rural location, Double L attracts visitors from all over the world, including Greece, Italy, and the UK, making it a unique stop for travelers exploring the region. Guests are greeted by friendly staff members like Laura Johnson, Susan Boettcher, Colleen Shoemaker, and Makynna Boettcher, aka Fred, who make everyone feel like family.
Beyond serving great food, Double L is deeply committed to giving back. They support local schools, FFA, and Kimball/Banner County 4-H, donating funds and baked goods for silent auctions. A standout initiative is their Military Fund, which allows customers to contribute toward free meals or milkshakes for service members – a small but meaningful way to honor those who serve.
Exciting changes are ahead for Double L, including a new Coffee Kiosk set to open in May in collaboration with Wittni Boettcher. The kiosk will offer grab-and-go coffee drinks, smoothies, burritos, and muffins, providing even more convenience for visitors.
Beyond the restaurant, Laura and David maintain a garden behind the café, growing fresh produce and raising chickens in the warmer months. Guests can even feed the chickens or watch them while dining.
With breathtaking scenery, exceptional food, and top-notch service, Laura Lee’s Double L Country Store is a destination worth the drive. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’ll leave with a full belly and a heart warmed by small-town hospitality.
