GERING – Lucy and Rudy Palomo sit at their kitchen table swapping quips, making jokes, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Their joy and comfortableness with each other is on full display. It should come to no surprise to anyone who spends 10 minutes with them how they have stayed married for the past 50 years.

Rudy was born in Harlingen, Texas, but moved to the valley when he was young to work as a migrant in the sugar beet fields. His is among 10 children – six boys and 4 girls – who found a home in western Nebraska. His father also drove trucks during potato harvest.

“Everything was fantastic here, and I’m glad we moved,” Rudy said. “The ocean is right there in Texas, but it’s just too hot.”

Lucy was born in Crystal City, Texas, but she came to work in western Nebraska as a migrant with her brothers and sisters. Rudy and Lucy met here and dated for a month before she returned to Texas.

“We wrote back and forth to each other,” Rudy said. “About six months later, I said, ‘Let’s get together,’ and I told her, ‘Hey, I got the ring.’”

Rudy wanted to do things the right way. He had to go speak with Lucy’s father and ask permission to marry her. He knew her father was a serious guy. He also brought his mother and father to the meeting.

“Her sisters said, ‘We gotta get out of here. Dad won’t like it,’” he said. “We got there, and he was sitting quiet as a cat.”
