Western Drug in Sidney, owned by Tom and Cindy Birner, has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. Originally established in 1892 when the Fort Sidney apothecary opened his own shop, the business began as Scanlon Drug before rebranding as Western Drug in the 1940s.
Tom Birner’s father, Joel Birner, bought into the business in 1967 and operated it until 2000. Tom, a 1986 Sidney High School graduate, became a registered pharmacist in 1995 after earning his degree from the University of Wyoming. Since taking over, he has continued the family’s legacy of providing exceptional pharmaceutical care and customer service.
Western Drug offers prescription services and a variety of gifts, but it is best known for its fast, friendly service and strong community ties. In addition to its pharmacy operations, the business produces Old West Kettle Fudge, a popular treat among customers. The store stands out as the only pharmacy in Sidney with a drive-thru and delivery service.
Longtime employees, including Pat Frickle, Kathy Gertz, and Paul Gue, contribute to the store’s welcoming and reliable atmosphere. The pharmacy is deeply involved in supporting the local school system and donates to numerous charities.
After operating at its original location for over a century, Western Drug moved next to the post office in 2002 to accommodate a drive-thru, improving accessibility for customers.
Tom and Cindy Birner take pride in maintaining a small, family-oriented business that prioritizes personal connections and customer loyalty. Tom, a lifelong Sidney resident, enjoys golfing, hunting, and fishing in his free time. His two dogs, frequent visitors to the pharmacy, are beloved by customers.
