GURLEY – Dillon Juelfs, a senior at Leyton High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for February. He’s one of the top basketball players in the region. Last season he was named to the Minuteman Activities Conference First Team, and this season he’s averaging 17 points and six rebounds a game. Juelfs, a forward, is in his second year as a starter, and his contributions have helped the Warriors excel as a team, including winning both the Perkins County Holiday Tournament and the MAC Tournament. Leyton had a 14-0 record as of Jan. 24. Juelfs also plays golf, and he’s been on the varsity team each of the last three years. Last season he missed qualifying for state by just a few strokes. Juelfs is also a standout in the classroom as he has a 3.7 GPA and is involved in National Honor Society. Outside of school, he works for a local farmer. After high school, he plans to attend Mitchell Technical College in Mitchell, South Dakota, to earn a lineman certificate. His parents are Temple and Jeff Juelfs.

Q: Talk about how this season has been going for Leyton’s boys basketball team.

JUELFS: “It’s been going really well. We’ve been playing hard, and we’ve been playing really good as a team.”

Q: What were the team’s expectations coming into the season?

JUELFS: “We expected to win a lot of games. Our biggest goals were to win our holiday tournament, the MAC Tournament championship, and make it to state.”

Q: What’s helped Leyton have so much success this season?

JUELFS: “I think we play pretty good defense, and we’re quick. Also, everybody on offense is a threat to score. The other thing that’s helped is that some wrestlers came out for basketball this year, so they’ve helped make us a stronger team.”
