Darren Emerick of Bridgeport walked away from a six-figure corporate job to coach, mentor, and serve kids across western Nebraska

BRIDGEPORT – When people talk about retirement, they usually picture golf courses, cruises, and maybe a quiet life at home.
When Darren Emerick “retired” at age 50, he wound up on a tennis court in Bridgeport, herding six- and seven-year-olds with foam balls and tiny rackets, trying to explain a sport most of them had never even seen on TV.
“I went from making six figures in a corporate job to making a tiny fraction of that,” Emerick said. “I looked in the mirror, and I didn’t see any change in my life – in terms of happiness. There were changes in how much money I made and what I spent it on, but the peace I found in that, the satisfaction I found in that, there’s no comparison.”
