NSPIRING YOUTH: 8-year-old Hemingford girl finds creative way to brighten people’s day during the holidays

Lzzy Covey, 8, of Hemingford, came up with an idea in December to help bring joy to elderly residents in her community. She spent two days wrapping people’s Christmas gifts for free, and her Gift Wrapping for Charity fundraiser netted about $150 from free-will donations. She then divided the money into 14 envelopes with a bow on them, and she delivered them to elderly residents’ homes as a surprise just before Christmas.

HEMINGFORD – A few weeks ago Lacy Covey of Hemingford shared a story with her 8-year-old daughter, Lzzy, about a fundraiser she had participated in when she was a kid.

On a Saturday close to Christmas, Lacy and some of her fellow 4-H members set up a table at a local store where they offered to wrap people’s gifts. The gift wrapping was free, but patrons could make a free-will donation to the 4-H club. The fundraiser ended up being a big success.

Lacy figured the conversation about the gift wrapping fundraiser would end there; however, it didn’t. The story sparked an idea by Lzzy.

“I thought maybe I could organize a similar fundraiser to help people in our community,” she said. “I thought it would be a good way to brighten some people’s day.”
