NSPIRING YOUTH: Crawford girls blossoming into a ‘special’ team

After failing to meet its expectations last season, the Crawford High School girls basketball team has turned things around in a big way this season. The Rams have used their experience, potent shooting and solid defense to win most of their games so far, and they hope to finish the season with a bang by winning subdistricts and the district final and advancing to the state tournament for the first time since 2015.

CRAWFORD – After finishing the high school girls basketball season two years ago with a 14-10 record and a trip to the district finals, the Crawford Rams had some pretty lofty goals coming into last season.

Their high expectations made sense considering the Rams returned most of their team, including all of their starters, from the previous season.

However, last season ended up not going nearly as well for the Rams as they had hoped. They won only nine of their 22 games, and they ended the season with heartache, losing to their rival Sioux County in the sub-district tournament final.

“I was disappointed with how we played last season, and I know the girls were really disappointed, too,” said Rick Barry, who’s in his 15th year of coaching, including his seventh year guiding the Crawford girls. “With the season we had two years ago, and with all the girls we had back last year, we really felt like we could be pretty good last season. But we ended up struggling throughout the year.”
